TITLE: A Message from the Founder
PUBLICATION: The Philadelphia Inquirer New Health Symposium Supplement

DATE: September 9, 1998

As Philadelphia gave birth to a great nation, so too it has fostered a world-class community of health and healing professionals. The “City of Brotherly Love” is a place not only where disease is cured, but where vitality is nurtured. With its abundant diversity of caring practitioners, the whole region is a beacon of light, holding compassion and hope and newfound joy for countless lives.

Pain and suffering are foreign to no one. Whose family is without problems? Whose job has no friction? Who knows no sickness? Loved ones die. Divorces are often bitter. Jobs are lost. We are faced with reports of racism, crime, reckless driving, alcoholism, drug addiction, abuse, terrorism, and war on a daily basis. We see misunderstandings between friends. We question fairness. We entertain cynicism, and we know fear. We are injured and and we injure others -- wittingly, unwittingly.

Amidst this disease and dis-ease, there also exists the possibility to grow, to learn, to heal, to triumph. The New Health Symposium® is a tribute to the people who choose and are committed to live life from this place of possibility.

Over a hundred events hosts -- places throughout the Delaware Valley where health and healing actually happen -- have come forward this first year to give new meaning to “health,” and share information about the myriad possibilities that are open to people today. Hospitals, universities, institutions, restaurants, gyms, fitness centers, spas, beauty salons, churches, bookstores, food stores, clinics and practitioners offices, and numerous associations have shaped the New Health Symposium®, giving voice to current healthcare issues, and presenting new options for everyone to consider.

The range of topics is vast, addressing concerns at every phase of the health cycle, from prevention, through identifying illness, to the process of healing and living with obstacles, the support and ongoing maintenance of vitality, and the desire to be the healthiest and best that we can be, and achieve our maximum potential.

The New Health Symposium® does not advocate one healing path or treatment over another. Instead, it offers a forum for the many paths to be explored, and the multitude of treatments to be discussed. The guiding principle in planning the calendar of events was simply this -- the more informed we all are about our health, the better able we are to make decisions about it.

Ever increasing numbers of consumers and healthcare professionals are reexamining the boundaries of medicine, searching for new information about health and healing. Studies have shown that one in every two or three Americans have tried some kind of “alternative” medical treatment. Nomenclature can be confusing, because it is reflective of the changing times. What is, for example, “traditional” versus “alternative”? Herbal remedies used far earlier than scientific treatments, yet, modern medical science most often receives the “traditional” moniker, and the herbal remedies are considered to be the “alternative” group. Are the new approaches that cross both paths best called “holistic” or “wholistic,” “alternative” or “integrative”? The New Health Symposium® is the simplest name for an approach that looks at all protocols, old and new, used apart from each other, and in concert together. In the eleven daysThe New Health Symposium® will be held, names are less important than discovering what works best. “Form follows function” in the architecture of our lives.

The conception and construction of The New Health Symposium® is testament to the power of an idea whose time has come.
W.H. Murray’sThe Scottish Himalayan Expedition, offers a parallel explanation from Goethe. “The moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no person could have dreamed would have come their way. Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it; boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”

The New Health Symposium® started with an idea and a commitment to make it happen. It’s momentum and support grew faster than even Goethe could have predicted. Judy Faye’s annual culinary festival, The Book & The Cook, gave the idea a structure. Lynn Volkman brainstormed with me. Alphonse Pignataro and Nancy Gold of Center City Proprietors gave us the first official endorsement. Harold Morley of Temple University introduced me to Dr. Sally Rosen, and then Nancy Kolenda of the Center for Frontier Sciences. The Mayor graciously welcomed everyone at the announcement of The New Health Symposium® to the general public. Myrna Brind from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s Center for Integrative Medicine offered to organize the opening event. Donna Smith stepped forward to help coordinate events, and was joined by a team which included Joyce Hanley, Tish Byrne, and Loreta Vainius. Bard Associates staff gave the office support the event needed. Rev. John Salunek, Marla Soffer and Charles Balducci gave time and valuable expertise. Antanas Vainius volunteered and assured accuracy. Georgette duBois of The Yoga Garden said the first “thank you,” giving us all encouragement. Sponsors came forth, and hosts created their events. The idea unfolded, and with every day became more exciting. Not always was there agreement, but in the end, understanding, and the idea itself prevailed.

Margaret Mead reminds us, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” I am deeply grateful to all the people who helped create The New Health Symposium®, taking a step to make the world healthier. And I am deeply grateful to all the people who supported me and brought me to the place in my own life where I could serve by founding an event like The New Health Symposium®.

On behalf of The New Health Symposium®, and everyone involved, I invite you, to join us this October 1 through 11 and take another step on your own journey to greater health and vitality.
