LARGEST HEALTH SYMPOSIUM IN AMERICA
BEGINS IN PHILADELPHIA OCTOBER 1

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The New Health Symposium® is an eleven day forum beginning today, consisting of over one hundred events hosted at independent locations, featuring renowned authors and practitioners of healing in the arts, the medical sciences, nutrition, psychology, sports and fitness, religion and spirituality.

New Health Symposium® founder and producer Krista Bard commented, “The broad range of disciplines reflects America’s changing attitudes towards health, a greater demand for information, and a desire to take a more active role in creating health in our lives.

“Philadelphia has always been a great healing center. Even today, over 20% of all the physicians in America have been trained in Philadelphia medical institutions. At the turn of the century, there was a plethora of what we now call ‘alternative’ practitioners here; this too is flourishing again. Participants in The New Health Symposium® are giving new meaning to ‘health’ by offering programs that address the whole person -- body, mind and spirit -- and integrate every aspect of a healthy life.”

Statistics reflecting this changing attitude toward healthcare include:

  • In a recent study commissioned by Landmark Healthcare Inc., 42% of American adults had used some kind of alternative care in the past year, and more than two thirds of the people surveyed said the availability of alternative care would be an important factor in choosing a health plan.
  • More than half of the 80 HMOs surveyed planned to offer alternative care in some way over the next year or two.
  • Over 40 U.S. medical schools currently offer alternative medicine curricula.
  • U.S. sales of herbal supplements are projected to increase from $1.96 billion last year to $2.3 billion this year. The overall vitamin market has grown 100%, to $6 billion last year.

In this first New Health Symposium®, Bard fostered an interdisciplinary approach to health, bringing together hospitals, universities, institutions, restaurants, gyms, fitness centers, spas, beauty salons, churches, bookstores, food stores, clinics, practitioners offices and numerous associations.

“The response,” noted Bard, “was overwhelmingly positive. Never before has there been such a spirit of cooperation between professionals, with an unparalleled openness to different ideas and healthcare modalities. Participants in this first New Health Symposium® have truly given new definition to the meaning of ‘health,’ and new hope for healthcare in America.”

Over 2,000 people are expected to attend tonight’s opening event at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia, hosted by Jefferson University Hospital’s new Center for Integrative Medicine, with internationally acclaimed humorist Loretta LaRoche. Philadelphia Mayor Edward G. Rendell has proclaimed October 1-11 official New Health Symposium Days throughout the city, inviting everyone “to take a step on their own personal journey to greater health and vitality.” Over 20,000 people are expected to attend events during the eleven day Symposium.
